9 Energy Tips For Winter

Winter is in full swing and many customers are wondering about the things they can do to help save money on their heating bill. Here are some tips to make your home more efficient and your family more comfortable:

  1. Let the sun in – Open the drapes and let the sun heat your home during the day. Be sure to close them when the sun goes down to help insulate your home.
  2. Move your furniture– Move your furniture so you are sitting near interior  Exterior walls and older windows can be drafty.
  3. Keep your wood fireplace closed – Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. This will prevent warm air from going up the chimney.
  4. Turn off ventilation fans – Turn off kitchen and bath ventilating fans after they’ve done their job. These fans can let warm air escape if left on.
  5. Install a programmable thermostat – Many thermostats give you the ability to schedule temperature changes by the hour for each day. These thermostats are popular because you can set the temperature to reflect your family’s schedule.
  6. Seal leaks – Add caulking or weather stripping to seal air leaks around doors and windows. Even the smallest gap around a door will cause warm air to leave your home.
  7. Schedule service for your heating system – A properly maintained furnace, boiler or water heater will operate more efficiently and also extend the life of your heating equipment.
  8. Insulate water heater pipes – Insulate the pipes around the water heater with inexpensive, easy-to-install pipe insulation. This is particularly helpful if the water heater is in an unheated space.
  9. Properly insulate your attic – If you have an older home, then you may require more insulation. Consider upgrading your insulation with spray-foam or bat insulation.

When Is The Right Time To Replace Your Furnace?

It’s difficult to know if your furnace should be replaced. There usually aren’t a lot of external signs; however there are some basic considerations to help you make an informed decision.

Age

  • Based on industry averages, a 20-year-old furnace could be nearing the end of its life expectancy and investing in a new heating system may be a better option than dealing with costly repairs on an aging unit.

Efficiency and Savings

  • Furnaces have become more efficient as a result of new technology. Newer heating oil furnaces have efficiencies above 80%, and propane furnaces can have efficiency ratings as high as 94%.

Size

  • It is important for your furnace to be properly sized for your home to run at peak efficiency during the winter, especially if you have recently taken steps to make your home more energy efficient. An oversized furnace can be less efficient than a properly sized one, potentially costing more money to heat your home.

Reliability

  • No matter how old your furnace is, we suggest an annual cleaning and inspection to make sure your furnace is working properly and to help identify issues. A proactive decision puts you in charge of the timeline, and can help avoid an unexpected break down in the middle of winter.

Energy Efficient New Year’s Resolutions

It’s the time of year for New Year’s resolutions! We often have goals to save for a vacation, spend more time with loved ones, go to that play at the local theatre, or try a new restaurant.

Here are some tips to consider to help improve the efficiency of your home heating strategy in the new year.

  • Consider capping your propane or heating oil costs. With Cap Pricing, you simply pay a small fee to ensure that your price will never go higher than the capped price. But should prices go down, you get the benefit of paying the lower price.
  • Setting up a budget plan is also helpful so you can spread your heating costs out over the entire year and have a consistent payment each month.
  • In the home, keep vents clear of furniture and appliances so your furnace can work more efficiently.
  • Make sure that your heating system is in good working order as dirty filters can restrict airflow and make your system operate less efficiently.

If you have any questions on these tips or how Irving Energy can help you with your home heating needs in 2015, you can reach us at 1.888.310.1924.

A Taste of Safety for the Holidays

Tis the season for homemade festive feasts and fresh baked holiday treats, cooked with care in your home’s kitchen. Some of our homes have propane fueled ranges and kitchen appliances, which have numerous benefits such as immediate heat impact and even distribution; many professional chefs favor gas for cooking!

If your range is fueled by propane, here are a few facts and safety tips to help keep you safe this holiday season:

• Propane smells like rotten eggs. If you suspect a leak, evacuate your household and contact 911 or your local fire department immediately. Then call Irving Energy at 1.888.310.1924. Do not return to your home until the fire department or qualified service technician determines the area is safe.
• Propane burns with a bluish hue. Any other color flame should be assessed by a technician to ensure your equipment is working properly.
• During power outages, your range should not be used as a source of heat.
• If your propane range or appliance is not working properly, schedule a maintenance call and have a trained technician service your system. This is not a job for the household handyman.

It is always good to be prepared and keep safety in mind when using any household appliance. To learn more about propane and its benefits or to set up automatic delivery so you can focus on this festive time of year, call us anytime at 1.888.310.1924.
