Featured Entry – Furnace 13

Karin from Topsham, Maine

“Our furnace is estimated at 60+ years old. It is an antique coal furnace that someone ‘cemented’ an oil burner into with some substance [we don’t dare guess what it is]. The burner is a 1973 Gulf oil ‘Econojet’ model, which we can’t even get parts for. The firebrick is crumbling, and the access openings we cemented shut to keep the combustion gases out of the basement. We called a technician to fix it once. We asked him if he could make it run better, and he said, “I don’t know why it runs now!” We can’t imagine what the ‘efficiency’ level is, but it uses LOTS of oil. We can’t afford to upgrade, so we’ve had to make do. A new furnace is really the answer. We hope we can win.”
